Digital Citizenship Resources

Safety Resources for web

Kids helpline has an incredible amount of information in regard to web safety.  How to be safe, what is safe and unsafe, acceptable and unacceptable communication, privacy, cyber bullying, sexting and so on.  It also has teacher resources and activities about staying safe online and lesson plans for years 3-6, 7-9 and 10-12.  The "Cyber Sin Movie" is well worth having a look at, I think it is great for teens to watch.  It certainly sent tears to my eyes.

Responsible use of web

Education World website gives a detailed description, lesson plans and boosters about responsible and ethical citizenship on the web.
“Think before you send” is a guide to open student discussion about personal information, photos, what is and isn’t appropriate to post and privacy issues. Digital literacy encourages student discussion about authentic court cases and considering their conclusions, understanding legal consequences, netiquette, implications for online behaviour and cyber ethics.  These lesson plans could easily result to you creating your own classroom rules and regulations to responsible, ethical and safe use of the web.

Ethical use of the web

The Socrates Institute has a cyber ethics project which creates awareness on safety, legal and ethical use of the internet for K-12.  The class lessons involve real case studies of juvenile cybercrimes such as hacking, piracy, cyber bullying and illegal downloads, a role-play game called “what-if?” which is based on different scenarios that students are given in groups or pairs and they need to discuss the related cybercrime, take on the character roles (i.e.: cyber-criminal, victim, authority) and perform the roles to the class and finally discuss with the students of “What can parents do about cybercrime?” the have the students perform various “what if?” scenarios.  I love this idea of interconnecting technology and performing arts.  The beauty of Technology and the Arts is that they so easily integrate into all subjects and can be used to implement practical learning.
